How we research and verify each state's tax figures
Each state page cites the official state tax agency's source (name and link, visible in the "Methodology & Source" section of every state page). Before a state page is published, we:
- Identify the state's tax structure — no income tax, flat rate, or progressive brackets — from the state Department of Revenue's own published rate schedule, not a third-party aggregator.
- Transcribe the exact rate, bracket thresholds, and standard deduction/exemption figures from that primary source for the current tax year.
- Run a worked test scenario through our calculator and cross-check the arithmetic against independently sourced tax figures, logging the result and verification date.
- Record a "last verified" date and guideline version on the page. State tax rates and federal brackets change annually — we flag known unresolved ambiguities (e.g. secondary sources disagreeing on a state's exact bracket structure) directly in the page's methodology section rather than silently picking one.
We do not employ or claim review by a licensed CPA or tax attorney. This is a data-verification process, not professional tax advice — see our disclaimer on every calculator page. If you need tax advice, consult a CPA or your payroll department.
What this calculator does and doesn't cover
All calculation happens in your browser using JavaScript loaded from this site. This v1 covers federal income tax, FICA (Social Security + Medicare), and state income tax, assuming a single filer with no pre-tax deductions. It does not currently model married-filing-jointly brackets, 401(k)/health-premium pre-tax deductions, or local/municipal income tax — several states (Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Alabama, Oregon, Delaware, Iowa) have local tax layers that can be significant, and each affected state page discloses this explicitly rather than silently omitting it.
