Hourly to Salary, and Gross to Net — How the Conversion Works

  1. Hourly → Annual: hourly rate × hours/week × 52, plus 1.5x for any weekly overtime hours entered.
  2. Gross → Net: gross salary minus federal tax (2026 brackets), minus FICA (6.2% Social Security + 1.45%/1.45%+0.9% Medicare), minus state income tax if a state is selected.
  3. Net → Gross: the reverse of gross → net. Since tax brackets are non-linear, there's no single formula — this converter narrows in on the gross salary whose net result matches your target, to the nearest dollar.

Federal brackets, standard deductions, and FICA constants sourced from the IRS (Revenue Procedure 2025-32; married-filing-jointly Additional Medicare threshold of $250,000 is a separate, unindexed statutory figure). State tax, where selected, uses that state's dedicated calculator page figures — see state comparator for a full state-by-state breakdown. Guideline version: 2026-v1 · Last verified: 2026-08-26.

Salary Converter FAQ

How do I convert an hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by hours worked per week, then by 52 weeks — this converter also factors in weekly overtime at 1.5x if you work any. $25/hour at 40 hours/week is $52,000/year before tax.

How do I convert gross salary to net (take-home) pay?

Subtract federal income tax, FICA, and state income tax (if applicable) from gross salary. This converter runs the full calculation, including an optional state selection for a more precise figure.

Can I convert net pay back to gross salary?

Yes — select "Net → Gross" above. Because tax brackets are non-linear, this is solved by narrowing in on the gross figure that produces your target net pay, rather than a single reverse formula.
