Estimate your 2026 take-home pay after federal tax, FICA, and California state tax

Estimate only — not tax advice. Supports single, married-filing-jointly, and head-of-household filing status, plus optional pre-tax 401(k), HSA, and health insurance deductions (401(k) reduces federal/state taxable wages only; HSA and health premiums also reduce FICA wages, per standard IRS treatment). See methodology below for source and last-verified date. For your exact withholding, consult a tax professional or your payroll department.

How to Calculate Your California Take-Home Pay

  1. Start with your gross annual salary.
  2. Subtract the 2026 federal standard deduction ($16,100 single), apply the 2026 federal brackets (10%-37%).
  3. Subtract FICA: 6.2% Social Security (up to $184,500) + 1.45% Medicare (+0.9% above $200,000).
  4. Subtract California's $5,706 standard deduction from gross wages, then apply the 9-bracket state schedule (1%-12.3%) marginally — plus 1% Mental Health Services Tax on income over $1,000,000.
  5. Subtract California SDI (1.3% of all wages, no cap in 2026) — a mandatory payroll deduction, not an income tax, but it reduces your paycheck.
  6. What's left is your net take-home pay.

Example: $65,000/year gross salary, single filer, California resident.

  1. Federal tax: $5,620
  2. FICA: $65,000 × 7.65% = $4,972.50
  3. CA taxable income: $65,000 - $5,706 = $59,294 → marginal CA tax = $2,127.57
  4. CA SDI: $65,000 × 1.3% = $845
  5. Net annual pay: $65,000 - $5,620 - $4,972.50 - $2,127.57 - $845 = $51,434.93 (≈$4,286.24/month)

California Paycheck Calculator FAQ

What are California's income tax brackets for 2026?

California uses 9 marginal brackets from 1% (income up to $11,079) to 12.3% (over $742,953 for single filers), plus a 1% Mental Health Services Tax on taxable income over $1,000,000, for a 13.3% top effective rate. These are the 2025 FTB Schedule X thresholds, the most recent published at time of writing — 2026 thresholds will be slightly higher once the FTB publishes its annual inflation adjustment.

What is California SDI and is it a tax?

State Disability Insurance (SDI) is a mandatory payroll deduction, not a state income tax — 1.3% of all wages in 2026 with no wage cap. It funds short-term disability and Paid Family Leave benefits and is withheld separately from income tax.

How much is take-home pay on $65,000 in California?

On a $65,000 gross salary, a single filer in California takes home roughly $51,435/year (about $4,286/month) after federal tax, FICA, state income tax, and SDI.

Methodology & Source

California state tax figures sourced from California Franchise Tax Board (https://www.ftb.ca.gov/forms/2025/2025-540-tax-rate-schedules.pdf), citing Cal. Rev. & Tax. Code § 17041 — 9-bracket schedule (1%-12.3%) plus 1% Mental Health Services Tax on taxable income over $1,000,000 (top effective rate 13.3%). Thresholds are the 2025 FTB Schedule X figures (2026 schedule not yet published at time of verification).. Federal brackets, standard deductions (single/MFJ/HoH), and FICA constants sourced from the IRS (Revenue Procedure 2025-32; married-filing-jointly Additional Medicare threshold of $250,000 is a separate, unindexed statutory figure). California's married-filing-jointly and head-of-household figures are not yet independently verified and currently fall back to single-filer brackets — see the caveat in the formula section above.

This is an estimate based on standard single-filer federal, FICA, CA state tax, and CA SDI calculations. Actual withholding may differ based on your W-4/DE 4 elections, pre-tax deductions (401k, health insurance), and other factors. CA's exact 2026 bracket thresholds are inflation-indexed and finalized by the FTB in late 2026 — this page uses the most recently projected figures and will be updated once finalized.

Pre-tax deductions assumption: HSA and health insurance premium contributions are assumed to also reduce the California SDI wage base, consistent with their FICA wage treatment. This is a reasonable default, not independently verified against California's specific California SDI statute.
